Today we discussed plagiarism. It’s related to one of the things that I had covered on one of my previous entries; Copyright law. Plagiarism consist of one thing: copying the content of this author and using it for your own benefit. This is something that is strongly condoned in all mediums; no one likes their ideas stolen. Without going to far in detail, here’s a link to a video about that specifically.

Additionally we discussed identity theft and it’s increase in our society.

There’s people out there with access to the internet that are capable of stealing your personal information to do exactly as the title of these miscreants suggests: to Steal your identity. I’ll go into much further detail specifically in this last subject, so keep an I open.

Today’s discusion consisted mostly about this blog and what things must be included to achieve the highest grade. the ideal way to add content would be to include links such as this one, and images. This is suppose to add a sense of attraction and a lil’bit of eye candy too.

Example:

Finally we discussed the demise of “British Encyclopedia”.

“British Encyclopedia” meets END at hands of Wikipedia

It’s pretty straight forward really. What many thought would happen, happened; Wikipedia eliminated the need for book encyclopedias.

Here’s an article about it in Wikipedia (For irony’s sake).

It’s not surprising that it happened. Much of the information that was included in the original paper/book version is already included in Wiki, with one mayor difference: 2,000 Dollars out of your pocket. The orginal version of Encyclopædia Britannica, as it is officially named, is worth around 2,000 US dollars to obtain all 30 volumes of it, and this in reality is just a rough estimate.  On the other hand you have Wikipedia; it has free information that can be freely accessed and edited at any time. Free access and the ability to edit has it’s disadvantages, but the advantages far outweigh them; such as:

  • Easy access from anywhere there’s internet
  • Environmentally Friendly (somewhat at least. Electricity is still oil)
  • Info. on anything and everything (Even things you might not even want to know)
  • Can be corrected and Edited at any time
  • Quick searchabilty – Not having to search alphabetically for whatever you have to between 30 massive volumes
  • but most of all, it’s free

It’s sad that such and amazing compilation of information has ceased circulation, but there’s good news for those that are heavily interested. The company decided to print what I believe where at least 2,000 more copies of the Encyclopedia, though I also assume the price will scale accordingly. If you’re really interested, or were involve with the Encyclopedia before you can visit their website, it provides a similar , if not identical service as the Encyclopedia.

For those of us that can’t afford Encyclopedia Britannica, we’ll stick to Wiki. There’s not much to loose, the one upper hand the Encyclopedia has is Authorship, but I’m sure the teach won’t mind if our Civil War paper says it happened in 1936 (Don’t worry, it doesn’t really say that). Wikipedia is a great source of information, doubtful? corroborate, search other cites, go to the library, actually read your class books or other books on the subject, Can’t do that? Well, be ready to pony up 2 grand, it hurts, doesn’t it?

Recently as January 2012 there was a mass attempted suicide in Wuhan china at the rooftops of factory. This was a protest to the treatment of one company: Foxcon.

Foxconn is a a multinational electronics manufacturing company. In other words, these are the guys that make our iPhones, iPads, PS3s, Xbox360’s etc. Additionally it’s well known for being the greatest provider of these things in china. So, if your new iPad or iPhone says “made in china” it probably came from here.

Other than the sheer size of the company and it’s exporting capabilities they are also known for one additional detail: Suicide.

Foxconn is credited, by 20 Universities  in Hong Kong who studied the company with: Suicides, poor labor conditions, illegal overtime and management style that the universities referred to as  “inhumane and abusive”.

So now that you know, here’s the jist of it. Recently, due the conditions that the workers suffered there was a mass protest in which a total of 150 workers (I also heard elsewhere that it may have been double that) threatened to commit suicide in mass if their salary was not raised. Well, what happened you may ask.

“The employees had asked for a raise but were told they could either quit with compensation or keep their jobs with no raise. The employees quit, but did not receive their compensation.”

-Wikipedia article on Foxconn

“But did not receive compensation”… Did I read that right?!

Think about it like this. If this were happening in your country, what would happen? What if that one factory taht is somewhat colse to your hose had people jumping of it every once in a while, ad then had 150 attempt the same? I don’t know about you, but even our government would take action. That “factory” would be under the unwavering eye of our justice system, but maybe it’s just me. Still this is not a common occurrence, at least not in the US, but out there it’s accepted as normal, but does it mean that it’s right? I’ll let you decide that.

If you want to read up on a lil’ about it here’s a link from my buddies at Wikipedia, if you mistrust the Wiki, then by all means use other mediums, you’ll come up with the same thing wither ways.

Finally here’s a Vid ABC news did about Foxconn, though be aware that all of this is after the attempted suicides, Foxconn is trying to look pretty so now they’re moving stones and pebbles to make things right, still here it is.

Well, more precisely, no he did not lie, or at least he didn’t lie to our faces.

Everybody must alrady be aware of the Youtube sensation that struck us recently; KONY 2012. Well readers, I’m here to tell you that most of what you saw in that video is an exaggeration. Yes, there’s a Joseph Kony; Yes he did horrendous things to young children, but there’s one detail Jason Russell failed to explain: Kony hasn’t been heard of in over five years.

The guy has been gone for a while, some rumors even suggest that he’s dead. Ugandans have been questioned about this man and a large percent of them care nothing or very little for this man. SO, what kind of conclusion does this lead too? Well, Jason Russell and the rest of Invisible Children getting rich off the video and off those that went far enough to buy the “KONY 2012 Action Pack”. Joseph Russel utilized old almost irrelevant news to earn money.

Okay, I know some of you are going to argue that there were “good intentions” behind the extremely well produced video. Well, yeah, I’ll give you that. It was a very well produced and edited piece of documentary cinema, it does deliver a good message and it shows how society is changing a lil’ at a time through the mediums of communication (The whole thing about making a change trough unity Yada Yada Yada),but that’s were it stops. I very sincerely doubt that Jason Russell is caring much for the cause right now, especilly after recent news.

“According to NBC San Diego, Mr. Kony 2012/Hot Dad 2012 Jason Russell was allegedly drunk and masturbating in public on Thursday night in San Diego.”

– The insider

By Meg Swertlow

Yeah, you read right. And of course he was arrested for this. Oh, but wait, there’s more.

“Lt. Andra Brown says in addition to allegedly masturbating (yes, there’s more), he reportedly vandalized cars and was possibly under the influence of something.”

I’m sorely disappointed in all of this. I started of believing there was finally going to be a change and this would be and example that would lead others to follow, but I was wrong.

That’s the last I will say, I’ll leave you with an additional bit of info. but it won’t come from me. This one comes form a young woman of Ugandan heritage that had a Lil’ something to say, and I must say, she did a splendid job.

I’ll be staying up to date keeping track of Jason Russell, I really want to hear what he has to say, there’s already rumors taht he did it because of the presure, well, we’ll see.

Stay Tuned. And don’t loose hope.

KONY 2012, a worldwide dynamic, a murderer and a life changing person. Nowhere near in a good way though. Long himself is a person that has caused nothing but harm, but there’s an irony to this. It is with this common enemy that people have united. But enough about it from me, see it for yourself.
